The vein can be irritated and even infected after an IV. Swelling would also go along with either of those. It could also be that some of the fluids you were receiving got out of the vein and into the tissue, this is not serious but can be painful. If that is the case the body will absorb the fluids over the next few days. If the area where the needle was inserted is not red or showing any other signs of infection try putting a warm wash cloth on the area several times a day until it feels better. Watch for fever, redness and drainage around the site. See your doctor in a couple days if it doesn't improve.

you iv might have infiltrated- that is slipped out of the vein and the fluid was absorbed in the skin layer
warm compresses 20 min. at a time and tylenol should help relieve the swelling and discomfort
if the area becomes red hot or drains or if you see a red or
purple line develops in the area of the iv site see you doctor immediately it could be infected or a thrombosis could have formed

Something that is called a blowout, (well military term anyway) If and when you get a needle stuck in your vein and it goes in one side and out the other, it will have symptoms like you have explained. Nothing really major if that is what has occured, swelling will go down in a couple days and all will be well.

iT COUld be an infection from the iv site. It could be an allergic reaction to the medication you recieved. It could be blood clot that formed due to vessel irritation. If it has been a few days and not improving, you should see your doctor and have this checked out.
