I live in the bay area and would like info on steam or narrow gauge train rides say between here and reno,

Does the link below help? While I can't think of any narrow-gauge operations in California, at the moment, the state does offer plenty of excursion train rides. Have fun wherever you decide to go!

I've ridden on the Big Trees & Roaring Camp RR in the Santa Cruz Mountains in Felton. A fun and interesting ride: http://www.roaringcamp.com/

I don't know of any other NARROW-gauge roads... but there are many other "excursion" and "tour" trains running on "abandoned" standard-gauge rails:

There was the Camino, Cable, & Northern many years ago. I don't know if it still exists.
