No, it's not an ego issue...The most common response to this is that they think that the information can be used against them, no matter how benign the behavior. Check out "paranoid personality disorder."

Why wouldn't you be afraid of others knowing your business? Some things are just not other people's business. Sometimes, you just feel like you don't know or trust someone else well enough for them to know some things. Some people have something to hide. Some people are just private people. I don't understand people who feel the need to tell everyone everything...I think *that's* an ego issue, i.e. assuming other people actually give a damn or want to know. Some of those people talk so much about themselves and their lives that other people can't get a word in edgewise, and it's like the people doing all the talking don't even care what's up with you.

Our recent history in the 1900's displayed some gross violations of personal privacy. The Nazi's, for one delved into people's private matters in order to condemn them to death in concentration camps, or to simply shoot them in the street.
We have seen the KGB of Russia watching people in unreasonable ways. In China people were sent to prison if they told someone they were a Christian. The government would try to find and stop people from such personal conversations. In the USA we deal with identity thieves and hackers trying to steal our personal information and our good-name and our credit in order to steal our money. Some stores will try about anything to get ahold of your phone number. They will sell lists of phone numbers to phone solicitors........you know, the people who call at dinner time trying to sell you things you don't need or try to trick you by saying you have "won" something, but what they really want is your money.
Why are some people afraid of others knowing their personal business? The District Attorney in our city says to keep your personal information personal, so you don't get ripped-off.
It is a matter of safety.
I really do not want to see my personal opinions and business, or the questions I ask my Dr.... spelled out across the page of the newspaper for everyone to read. Some things have got to remain private. Just maybe this could be considered ego.

Because it's personal, and unless you have a "need to know," it's not your business.
