There are a bunch of different types of staphyloccocus (staph) bacteria.

Some staph infections are reasonably mild. (If you've ever gotten even a small boil that may have eventually cleared up, that's a staph infection.

At the same time, some types of staph infections can kill people.

When you say "how big does it get", if you mean someone has a boil and you're asking how big the boil can get: They can get pretty big, but usually they reach a point where they break after they get to a certain size. Pea-size is common, but then the area around it can swell and make it seem bigger.

If there's no sign of one coming to a head, and if its just getting bigger and bigger a person should see a doctor, who can empty it and put the person on antibiotics if necessary.

If your question is about boils you could look on a reputable medical site and search for "boils". You'll get the information you need.

the staph is feeding on the blood/flesh of the host. it is a multi-organism culture and the culture will happily grow until it runs out of food or the host becomes inhospitable to the bacteria. that is to say as big as its food source allows it to become.
i have a friend in the tropics who told me he has lost six friend in twenty years to what started as topical staph. i have seen lesions three inches across and half an inch deep that healed by treatment.
you must care for localized staph infection or it will eventually move into the body at large through the blood or lymph system.
it is not hard to treat -- one must simply do so.....now.

It's called staph, for Staphylococcus aureus, a bacteria which normally lives harmlessly in and on your skin. Get it down into the skin, and you can sometimes have major problems. Big enough to get you dead, that's how big.
