Steve is not dead - he's just not on the show anymore. It's an urban legend.
Rubbermaid, McDonald's, and Mobil Corporation.
In 2007, he starred in the independently produced horror comedy film, Netherbeast Incorporated, and appeared as Mozart in the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival production of Amadeus.
Burns has been the focus of numerous specious rumors stemming from his departure from Blue's Clues and his subsequent decision to shave his head. These ranged from reports of terminal illness, drug addiction, and death from drug overdose or health problems. Despite his repeated efforts and the efforts of urban legend debunking sites, these baseless rumors continue to circulate. According to Burns, the decision to shave his head was based entirely on his encroaching male pattern baldness.

Actually I saw a thing on tv about how Blues Clues was created and he was on it. He said he really left because he was going bald and felt it was bad for the show. They brought the new guy Joe in as a replacement. They said the back to school thing was just a better send off for kids to understand than going bald.

Danny K and Kelsey have the correct info...besides the Snopes.com and IMDB info,Steve Burns left to pursue a music career (on the NY alt-rock circuit;he has released a CD or two since leaving "Blue's Clues").
Anybody who still says "Steve's dead" probably doesn't know about this:
http://steveswebpage.com
(That's right:Steve's own official website.)
This has gotta be one of the most persistent Nickelodeon-related rumors out there.

No, he quit because he was balding. It was on VH1 i believe. He said he didnt want to be doing a kids show while balding right in front of the screen. Hes very ok. Check out his website and pay attention to the little characters on the bottom of the screen

I doubt it...I think I heard that rumor in, like, 6th grade. It's just something that somebody started. I think he quit the show to follow his dream of being a rock star or whatever.

There were a lot of rumors a few years ago that he had died of a drug (I think it was heroin) overdose because he left the show, but they were nothing but rumors.
According to Wikipedia, he is alive.
