You can filed as "Head of Household" for your 2007 taxes. Next year (2008) you will file single.

No, you don't file as Qualified Widower. In 2004, your Status is Married Filing Jointly, and for the next two years that is 2005 and 2006 your status is Qualified Widower.
For 2007, you are Single or Head of Household (if you qualify). You can claim your son as dependent and qualify as Head of Household.

You should read IRS publication 17: Your Individual Income Tax, Chapter 2: Filing Status.

A test question it seems, given the date the child moved out the child's gross income over the exemption amount, and the fact that the taxpayer was able to file a joint return in 2004.

What year are you referring to? If your question refers to 2006 (which it will if this is a test), then the taxpayer is not a qualifying widower for 2006 since the son moved out in August 2006. In order to be a qualifying widower your child has to live in your home 12 months.

Answers are all over the board here. Most of the people posting here are pros, but sometimes even pros get it wrong. That is why you need to check a reference every time you have a question. It would be wise for you to save this link in you favorites that way you can find out for yourself no matter which year it is.

No, your filing status is Single. To use the Qualifying Widower filing status you child must live with you all year. See 2006 pub 501 p 8

PS most people here don’t mind answering questions, even homework questions. But I for one would appreciate it if you tried to answer it yourself and post the answer you think is correct. I will correct you if you are wrong and give a link to the correct answer.

This sounds like a question from a test????

But, if it isn't.....

You would've qualified for "Qualifying Widow(er) with Dependent Child" for 2005 and 2006 but this status can only be used for the two years after your spouse died. For 2007, you would be "Head of Household".
