From A Religious Standpoint, Satanism Started In The Garden Of Eden When Adam And Eve Chose Satan Over GOD. However, Modern Satan Worship Or Satanism Began With Aleister Crowley (Born Oct. 1875 Died 1947) Reputed To Be 'The Most Evil Man Alive' He Is Largely Credited For Most Of The Satanic Religions Today, Including The Black Church Headed By Anton LaVey. They Believe In Indulging The Senses And The Glorification Of Self, Treating Others As They Treat You. (The Opposite Of Biblical Teaching) And Oppressing Or Deposing The Weak Or Stupid To Achieve One's Goals. ( Again, In Opposition To Biblical Text) To Use All Of The Resources At One's Disposal (Including Black Magick) To Get What One Wants - WHATEVER THE COST. - If This Sounds A Lot Like Modern Society, It May Just Be We Are Closer To The 'Apocalypse' Than Many Would Like To Believe.

Just want to know about Satanism in general or a specific branch or subgroup of Satanism?

Phil F's answer covers LaVeyan Satanism. The individual is the Satan figure. Meaning that they are an adversary to the Christian faith. The individual is his/her own god/goddess. We don't sacrifice animals, rape anyone, or any of the other myths that are placed on Satanists by Christianity. We do for the most part act on instinct. Humans are animals so we act on instinct naturally. Yet there are some guidelines keeping us within the bounds of the law.

Unfortunately Phil F didn't look closer into the religion. It was not completely created by Anton Szandor LaVey. He drew from occult religions. He just molded the beliefs into LaVeyan Satanism.

Your best source of knowledge on LaVeyan Satanism would be The Satanic Bible written by Anton Szandor LaVey.

Satanism is the belief in Satan or the worship of Satan. There are many different kinds of Satanism so you can't really pin a definition. But usually what happens is that they invert it so that Satan is good and God is bad. Or Satan is an all powerful abstract entity and God is irrelevant. There are many beliefs ranging from Satan as being an alien and some tie in with the 72 demons of goetia. Luciferianism is closely related and diabolatry is the worship of demons. Not all Satanists worship Satan or some believe in Satan in a different way or some don't believe in Satan at all. It's a good idea to check wikipedia or get a hold of an idea of Philosphical and Theistic Satanism. Sometimes the Satanism is completely irrelevant to the Bible so they don't draw their beliefs from the bible.

Satanism can refer to a number of belief systems depending on the user and contexts. Common, but not precise, use of the word generally refers to "the worship of Satan or the powers of evil."[1]. However, in practice, Satanism is a general name for several distinct spiritual practices and beliefs: the three most significant seem to be LaVeyan Satanism, Theistic Satanism and Philosophical Satanism. But varieties of Satanism range from Philosophical Satanism (primarily atheistic) to the worship of an actual spiritual being (Theistic Satanism), which is rarely recognizable as the Christian devil (though some sects do worship the Biblical Satan, and may therefore be considered unusual variants of Christianity); from the practice of an ancient but misunderstood religion (e.g. Setianism associated with the Egyptian god Set who is conflated by some with the Biblical Satan), to the atheist[2] exaltation of hedonistic recreation and the celebration of self-interest and pleasure as rational practices.

Well, that wikipedia site posted earlier, for one.

To my understanding, there is more than one kind of Satanism. Most forms (I'm told) are philosophical in nature, using "Satan" as an idea but without practitioners having a literal belief in an evil supernatural being named "Satan."

There are apparently some forms that do believe in Satan as a literal supernatural being of some form, though not necessarily evil. Some prefer the term "Lucifer" which means "Light-bearer," as in one who brings enlightenment or knowledge.

I'll provide some websites that are related.

Satanism varies onto perception, for example: to a Christian, Satanism can be generalized as anyone who is not a Christian, an outsider. In any religion, the followers divide their beliefs into two parts, good and evil, good and bad doing, right and wrong, positive and negative. Satanism would be referred as the opposite side to the perception's right belief. It was as well used to label the community who worships the symbolic Satan of a religion, or abide to its concepts. Satanism ultimately came from the old "pagan" religions of Europe. The church accused these people of worshipping devils (none did, at least that are known), and this is the ultimate origin.

Anton LaVey founded the Church of Satan (though it doesn't include all Satanists). They don't actually believe in Satan, but they "worship" him as the antithesis to all standard religions.

Anton Levay started it.

Edit: you are absolutely correct. Aliester Crowley, HL Mencken, and various others were Levay's inspiration for his writings. I gave a simple answer when maybe i should have expanded. I also did not delve into the other forms of Satanism. Theistic Satanism and the like i did not touch because i believe that these are simply different forms of the Abrahamic Religion.

I can say from personal experience that being a satanism is not as it seems. From what I understand, you don't actually believe in Satan. You believe in the belief that living without the boundries of god, not being held liable by god of your sins, not having to regret your doings, not fearing being punished by a bigger being of your doings on earth. They do not actually believe in SATAN. Actually, they believe there is no life after death so do what you want now for there is no afterlife.
