We just got a 8-9 week old poodle mix puppy about 4 days ago. We have been trying to crate train him for about 3 days now. At night he sleeps with us but during the day when me or my boyfriend are are work or school, hes home in his crate. WE have never left him in there for longer then 2 hrs.We live in an aprtment and of course the walls arent that soundproof. I know he is gonna wine and cry, but he SCREAMS sooo loudly u can even hear him outside. You would think he'd stop but he doesnt he constantly screams and tries to get out. Then when he stops for a few seconds i let him out since hes calmed down, and then he goes right to sleep? I leave him food and water in there, treats, kong with penut butter, toys, and a shirt that smells like me, but he is not at all interested I would like to know if anyone else experienced their dog SCREAMING and not stopping for long periods of time? And how long did it take for them to stop (i know all dogs are different i would just like an estimate)

It sounds like he associates the crate with being left by himself. If he has made that association then he needs to think of the crate as a comfortable bed and playpen.

I would start from scratch and spend a day getting him to go inside the crate and eat treats, play, snooze with the door open and with someone at home. I would also leave him in it while you sleep. This teaches him some independence which will help with his separation anxiety.

You can even put treats and toys inside the crate, close the door and have him be all excited to go into the crate.

Before leaving, I would try and tire him out. That may mean several hours of romping, walking, playing, etc. so that he is ready for sleep before you leave. He may even want you to leave so he can sleep.

Some dogs never take to crates as some dogs are claustrophobic and others just can't stand the confinement in general. He is still so young that it is worth the try.

He is screaming because 4 days ago he was safe at home with his mom and his first family. Now he is alone with strangers, a new home, and is scared to death! If you are a baby animal, and you were "lost" and did not cry out for your mother to save you, you would most likely be attacked and eaten. This instinct remains in dogs as well. He will settle down with time, but no one can tell you how long that will take. He needs lots of exercise before being left alone so he is good and tired out. This will help him sleep while you're gone. Also, have good safe chew toys to keep him busy. Leave the t.v. on for him. Be patient--this is part of dog training and owning. Do not give up using the crate--it is the only sure way to housetrain and prevent chewing/destruction behaviors when you are not present. Also, work on crating him when you are home as well, so he learns to settle down with you there. This way the crate is not being associated with being left alone.

Provide a radio with some soft music. Make sure the dog goes outside before you put it in the crate as it might need to go to the bathroom. Unfortunately you're just going to have to wait it out and let him get used to being in there. My dog did the same thing and it took about a week. Do NOT give in to letting him out because he is loud. He will learn that by making noise you will come and give him what he wants.

Try leaving the crate door open for him during the day and put some treats in there. He will go in there on his own accord and take the treats and realize that it is a safe and comfortable place.

Good luck

My dogs were all a bit loud in their crates especially right when we were walking in the door. Have you tried giving the dog a safe toy to play with while you are away? Or maybe a shirt or something that smells like you to comfort him? I would also try a good romp or a bit of exercise before you guys leave to make him very tired... that way he will sleep while in the crate for that short amount of time. Also give him lots of praise when he goes in the crate. Good luck!

Before you go, give him a short walk to get him tired. Crate training can sometimes be tricky, so be consistent. For meals, put his bowls in the crate, forcing him to go in. Throw treats in and first close the door for brief periods of time. After lots of getting used to crate time, leave the room briefly and come back. Open the door and give him lots of praise. My dog would bark for 1 hour... or that was howlong it took fr me to go to sleep. Good luck!

He needs to get used to being in the crate when you are around, not just when you leave. Practice having him go in and out and make a game out of it. He should also sleep in it at night until he is used to it.

Puppy are a little like kids... some cry lots others don't

Unfortunately there's no quick fix... the only solution is time and you'll need to be patient.

Crate training and housetraining are about 2 of the easiest things to teach a dog.
