I have an American Bull dog, that just kind of wandered into our lives, we call him "Stranger' we keep him outside because we have 3 other dogs in the house. He is well fed, I go out and play with him for about an hour each day, and he is just as silly as can be. The problem is he won't go in his dog house when it is raining. How can I get him to understand that it is warm and dry in there? I have tossed bits of food and stuff in the house he will go in and get the food but stiil won't go in when it rains.

Well I don't know how long you have had the dog, or how long you have had the dog house. In any case, if you haven't had the dog for long, then it's just a matter of time, just keep working with him. If you had the dog house for another dog, then he is probably smelling other dogs and thinks it's not part of his territory, trying to avoid conflict. So, try cleaning the dog house to get ride of smells.

Did you check to see if there is a leak in his dog house? Check it carefully when raining. Poor doggie, he may be getting wet when it rains.
If there is a leak, go to a home store, such as Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Petco, Lowes, PetSmart, etc. they may have a clear, heavy plastic tarp, that allows him to see through it, you can put over the top of his house when it rains, but don't obscure his view through the plastic, so he can still stay warm and dry.
He needs to be able to see what's going on outside of his domain. Hopefully the plastic tarp will will stop the rain from getting into his house.
Never toss food to him, it's rude. Treat him with kindness.
Take the food to him and put it in his house, in a bowl. Would you want someone to TOSS food to you? I think not. Make your dog has cool, clean water everyday.
Woof!

If he is a stray, you never know what his previous living situation could have been. Maybe someone crated him for long hours and he was left there to sit in his own waste. Maybe someone locked him up in a cage and yelled at him. He could have a fear of small spaces. Build him a cover using some PVC pipe and some plastic roofing. Just make it something he can sit under. It may be more comfortable for him if he feels he can easily get in and out of it.

That sounds like a dog I had as a youngster, Prince ,he just didn't like to be inside. We couldn't even bring him into the house in-40 degree weather,he 'd break the door down to get out.some dogs do not feel comfortable unless they can see the sky?

My dog was the same way...May I suggest a patio? When the dog gets cold and finds warmth in his home, he will use it! Most of the time, dogs hate dog house's

WHY not find him a home inside someones house? You don't need any more dogs in your house. So find someone that can give him a forever home. Please don't leave him outside. That is no way for him to live. Maybe some idiot human just dumped him off in your neighborhood. You have been a kind hearted person to him so he stays.
I am sure someone would love to have him for a friend.
