The concept of sharing must be adhered to, so the roomate needs to observe territorial rules and should not encroach to your side. Even if you dont subscribe to the persons's beliefs doesn't mean that the person cannot practice cos dont forget you are sharing. Remember to share there must be also be give and take to a cetain degree cos you will see each other daily and need to get along.

I guess it depends on how strongly you feel against worshipping images. True, to each its own, but I think that in a dorm situation it is difficult to ignore it because the rooms are so small. Your roommate is entitled to his/her beliefs, yes, but so are you, too!

I happen to feel strongly about the commandment against worshipping graven images, so if I were in your situation I would first try and see if I could transfer to another room. If that is not possible, then you could try talking to your roommate and explaining how you feel about it. Be polite, explain your beliefs clearly, back it up with supporting text -- so your roommate does not feel as if you are persecuting him/her -- and try to work out a solution that respects both of your beliefs. Perhaps you could set up a screen on your side so you don't have to look at the images all the time.

A better question for me (a Catholic) might be: How would you feel if you have a roommate who is a Muslim or a Jew?

I would respect his freedom of religion. I would also use the opportunity to learn how other people worship the one true God of Abraham.

The entire world agreed to include freedom of religion in the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights. See Article 2: http://www.un.org/Overview/rights.html

The citizens of the United States think this freedom is just as important as the freedoms of speech or the press. All are part of the 1st Amendment of the U.S. Constitution: http://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/constitution.billofrights.html

Even the Catholic Church seeks and supports the freedom of religion for all human beings.

In the Vatican II document, Declaration on Religious Freedom, Dignitatis Humanae (Human Dignity), the Church states:

The human person has a right to religious freedom. This freedom means that all men are to be immune from coercion on the part of individuals or of social groups and of any human power, in such wise that no one is to be forced to act in a manner contrary to his own beliefs, whether privately or publicly, whether alone or in association with others, within due limits.

For the entire document, see: http://www.vatican.va/archive/hist_councils/ii_vatican_council/documents/vat-ii_decl_19651207_dignitatis-humanae_en.html

With love in Christ.

I support respecting other people's beliefs, as long as they aren't invasive. If it makes you uncomfortable say something. I'm Buddhist/Taoist personally, so it would spook me, like most everything Catholic; including my ex-boyfriend. If you note your roommate suddenly speaking in tongues I suggest cozying up to a clergy member or two. For all you know your roommate could actually be a Satanist in Catholic clothing. But yeah who wants pictures of tortured people and bloody dead guys on their wall? The rosary should be respected though, the pictures etc are a little much. Maybe you could go get one of those things Jews put on their front door (the name escapes me) and a Muslim flag on the wall, turn it into a theme. Like: "Theology room:_____(insert room number)." Then you could watch the movie Dogma on Fridays! read from the tohra Saturday, the Bible Sunday, and bust out your prayer rug five times a day!

ho hum, talk to your roomie...Have fun...Don;t be too serious...Try to not let it effect you too much?

If I weren't Catholic and I had a roommate like that, I wouldn't mind (and I would respect her) if she did that so long as she doesn't push her beliefs on me. I once had a roommate though who was born-again Christian who always got the kick out of telling me how bad my religion was, and I told her off. Bottomline is, we should respect each other's beliefs and religious preference.

If it bothers you so much tell the person about it and that as a partner in sharing the room, you find it offensive. If the person does not respect your views and removes the objects, find another roommate.

Assuming you're not talking about a dorm room...

As long as he keeps it in his own room, and does not decorate the common areas with his cult's ikonography and objects...unless they are genuine object d'art.

Anything in the common areas must be mutually agreed to.

Incidentally...if they put up images of God that are more than simply a burning bush...then they are likely sinning, since no one knows what God (or Yaweh) looks like, and God's own laws say you are not to worship false idols, and it most definately is false! ;)

Just respect them. Each of us has a right to choose his own religion so you should respect him on whatever religion he believes is right for him. If your roommate feels that putting images of God 'round his bedroom would make him feel comfortable, then let him be.

That would feel pretty nice. If everyone prayed the rosary once a day the world would be at peace.

Go for it I could care less and even support their endeaver however if they do not let me put up my Buddhist things or voice a problem with me doing so then we would have HUGE problem. It is fine too, if they want to talk religion with me but do not try to convert me if they do try then I would tell them that they need not waste their time with me for my Buddhist roots are imbedded to the core of the Earth.
