Is the final drive gear ratio dictated by the NASCAR rule book? How about the gear ratio in the transmission?

Nascar either dictates the rear gear at each track or they dictate the lowest rear gear that can be used. This used to be to limit rpm but after Talledega I don't have a clue as to their thinking.

All transmissions have to have a 1 to 1 forth gear and must be setup to run in 4th, the other gear ratios can be changed but cars must not be set up to use both 3rd and 4th gears on ovals.

From an article in 2005:

The gear rule implemented in 2005 by NASCAR restricting teams to a single, mandated gear at every race track with the exception of Daytona (Fla.) and Talladega (Ala.) - the two restrictor plate tracks on the Nextel Cup schedule - has changed the racing model at Pocono.

Gone are the days when teams were forced to out-think each other on transmission and rear end gear ratios so they could achieve maximum horsepower by having their engines turn maximum rpms. The single rear end gear available for Sunday's Pocono 500 is a 3.89-inch gear, a far cry from the 4.22-inch gear teams used to employ.

I believe some leeway is allowed in transmission gearing as different ratios are still needed for weather and temperature changes.

Yes the ring and pinion set up is your choice...The transmission final drive in forth is always 1:1 ratio!!!!

No Nascar dictates what they can use on certain track or a minimum-maximum range in the ring and pinion. It is 1:1 in the transmission!!!!

as of right now, not that i know of. Most tracks you need a restrictor plate limiting airflow and hence power.
