Its called "America's Army". It helps develop leadership, and teamwork. If you ever get the chance, play online against real soldiers. They will totally rape your ***.

Yes, the military uses various "simulators" to train soldiers. They have several programs that actually develops and researches virtual training techniques.
The Air Force uses simulators for pilot training (cheaper and allows the pilots to receive more practice). These simulators aren't much different than Microsoft Flight Simulator except the controls are more complicated and it's built for specific military aircraft.
I've seen a demo for the Army's combat simulator which puts the soldier in a virtual enviroment. This currently is in development.
Military doctors have simulators (hardware and software) to train in field medicine techniques.
...and yes, there's the video game that everyone else mentioned but that really is more of a recruiting tool than a training tool.

I have used one that uses real m-16's, modified for a virtual environment. pull the trigger and it feels and sounds like it is actually firing. only thing missing is the gunpowder smell. in front of you is a screen with either a video simulation of a real situation. all actors dressed like insurgents and iraqis or pictures of the shooting range. the one i did was where i was at a checkpoint and a bomb goes off. civillians come running at me, some bleeding, most carrying ak-47's. and from watching body language, i had to figure out who was actually hostile to me. it was very difficult to do. the bad guy started to shoot at me before i recognized who he was. then when you do shoot, (not real bullets) each shot is marked on the screen so you see where you were shooting and when and can discuss why the outcome happened as it did. a very effective training tool for a very difficult and dangerous battlefield.

Yes, very sophisticated video games. And the cost of operating them is thousands of dollars per hour.
It's far cheaper than having them use the actual weapon. And the training is very realistic.

depends on what he is talking about. the army has a training tool called the E.S.T. which is a very sophisticated video game that uses actually uses real weapons. this helps soldiers work on effective communication when bullets are flying, weapon orientation, cover fire tactics, and command and control for squad leaders.
