Are there any books or sites that I could access for help? General Groups? What did you find to help you?

Please I am NOT Christian so Bible based stuff isn't help.

This is NOT about mental illness. Sorry maybe I should have posted this in another section but a lot of what I am going to have to deal with will be to support him mentally.

I'm very sorry that you and your family are going through this terrible time. I have seen many of my family members through terrible illnesses and I know the pain and emotional duress that over takes each person involved. I just wanted to say, that God is always there for you. Sometimes He uses times like this to call us to Him. He will be more comfort to you than any person can be because He has the whole situation in His hands. You have my deepest love and empathy.

I would suggest getting books pertaining to it -- there are some great ones out there about bipolar, schizophrenia and borderline personality. Call your local mental health organization and ask them for support groups -- almost every place has a support group for family members so they can learn to cope.

My husband developed Type 1 diabetes (a.k.a Juvenile Diabetes) at age 40. What we both found most helpful was to educate ourselves about the disease and become "experts" in its pathophysiology and treatment options. As a Clinical Nurse Specialist, it was easy for me to gain access to clinical information, and to find local advocacy groups - although they were geared towards parents of children with diabetes. With this support, we learned to become advocates for his needs, which included finding an appropriate physician, and battling his insurance company to provide for his needs.

My point is that educating both yourself and your husband regarding his condition and treatment options can be empowering, and that empowerment is your chief ally in dealing with situations that arise due to his illness.

I haven't, knock wood. If there is a specific illness, there is sure to be a support group online. Email me if you like and maybe I can help do some research for you, or just to lend a shoulder...

Blessings,
Lady M

I can only offer my heartfelt sympathy and my experience of losing my husband last year to an illness that in the end was affecting his mind. I am afraid I may have more to offer you as to what did not work for us. My email is open. 8Track is an excellent resourcer.
