Everytime I see boxers and MMAs before a fight, they get vaseline put on their faces. Is that to help with the cuts? What exactly does it do?

it reduces the grip or drag of gloves or other body parts, so the skin will not abrade or tear.
It comes off which is why they reapply it between rounds.
They will also put it on their shoulders and chest sometimes.

The Vaseline helps the leather gloves slip off the face and head lessing the impact of the punch and helps avoid cuts.

the vaseline keeps the gloves from grabbing the skin which will cause cuts.

cuts down the impact of the punch by causing the other boxers glove to slide off the skin. put some on the upper part of your arm. pinch it, you dont get a good grip, you dont get a good pinch.

Helps keep the cuts down, by
protecting the skin from leather
burns & keeps the skin moist.
dry skin brakes & cuts easier.
