It seems like I'll spend 5 minutes patting the bottom of the bottle (like I'm burping a baby) and nothing happens and then BAM! half the bottle pours out and immediately drowns all my fries.

Any suggestions???

Here is a method that always works on a new bottle or any bottle that is hard to get started.

With the bottle in right hand tap the opened end about 3 inches down from the top on your free left hand using the index finger and middle finger of the left hand as a stop. Keep forcing the bottle up and down hitting your fingers while slanting the bottle toward your target food. Keep hitting until it starts coming out. It works every time.

Don't tap the bottom, tap the side of the bottle by the top and your ketchup will flow out better. an old trick of being in the business for 28 years. and it won't all come out at once. If this trick don't work take a butter knife and stick it in the bottle but then pour it out at a side angle. never hold aketchup bottle strait up and down, that is how half the bottle spills on your plate.

If it's Heinz 57, there is a 57 on the side of the bottle, and it's there for you to tap on it to make the ketchup come out better.

You can always stick a knife into the bottle while holding it horizontally, that takes the "pressure" out of the bottle to make it poor easier.

Do not turn the bottle 100% vertical.

Set it at no more than a 45 degree angle and gently shake it back and forth. That will get the ketchup moving and allow you to control how much comes out.

My nephew was having lunch with my mother in Seattle at Pike Place market a few years ago. He was having trouble getting the ketchup out of the bottle to have with his french fries, when Graham Kerr (The Galloping Gourmet) stopped at their table and told him to hold the bottle with the open end towards the plate and gently tap the neck of the bottle against his fingers of his free hand. It works like a charm. (He also said he doesn't like to eat ketchup on his fries because he thought it looked like a train wreck.).

A new bottle?

Take the lid off, insert a clean butter knife, twist the knife 360 degrees, remove the knife. The ketchup will now come out fairly easily. If you have a dispenser lid, you may wish to reattach it.

If it's an old bottle, invert the bottle when you store it.

You can immerse the ketchup bottle in hot water and in a couple of seconds take it out from it and pour out its contents.

I give it a good whack on the bottom before I open it then I tilt the bottle a little and insert a butter knife into it to start the flow.
