Lou Costello was Catholic. His father was Italian and his mother French Irish.

I have the greatest of memories of Lou Costello. He was a comedian not to be excelled in his time. He was quite a showman. He was out of town on November 4,1943 doing a radio broadcast. His only child was almost one year old, and he nick named him "butch" He told his wife to keep Butch up that night and not put him to bed, so he could hear his dad on the radio. He learned just before air time that Butch had downed in the family pool. Wanting to postpone the radio program, Bud Abbot his partner tried to persuade Lou to not do the program that night, but Lou was convinced that Butch would hear the show anyway, and they went on with the program. After the show ended, Bud Abbott told the audience what had happened.
