The first six months are about 10 - 11 years, at one year, about 15, at two years, in early 20s. A big breed at 8 or 9 years is about like a 60 yr old human, one that's 12 is about 80. A big breed making it to 15 or 16 years is like a human getting over 100. For a small breed that lives 18-20 years, it's somewhat different. An 18 year old small breed would be pushing 100, at 12 years, like someone in their 60s maybe.

Forget the 7:1 bit, it's only a rough average over a lot of different breeds and sizes. Different breeds and sizes mature and age at different rates.

The average is 1 dog year = 7 human years. In reality the first 6 months are equal to 18 years and it tapers off to about 3 human years as a dog gets older.

The last study I read they had it categorized according to breed/size as well as variable throughout the lifespan. Like small dogs aged slower during later years while large dogs aged at a faster rate but that dogs aged faster during some younger years and then slowed and then faster again... the 'average' is around 7 human years for each dog year but that is just an average to sort of go by and not reality :) A one year old Chihuahua is much older at that age than a one year old Mastiff -- they mature slower but then once they reach maturity, they tend to age faster than the smaller dog.

it is not 7 years to a humans 1...but it is very close////when your dog has reached 2 yrs..its equivelent to being 24yrs old...and add 4 yrs. for every human year after that......so if your dog is 5 well 5 x's 7 is 35...but if you do it the real way he's accually 36 years old....so my way is more accurate but you can use the 7 thing if its easier to remember...ok hope i helped....brett
