The requirement for driving sets a legal minimum, not an optimum.

Just like specifiing the amount of tread you *must* have on your tyres. Good tyres (ok, tires too) have rather more!

If someone came into my consulting room, and the best vision I could get them to was the legal minimum for driving, I'd want to know what was wrong with them, because something almost certainly would be.

Given the number of people killed by being in and around cars (40,000 per annum, USA?), my view is that I want the best vison I can lay my hands on for driving: I'm not keen on "well, they're legal" being a description of my eyes or my tyres!

The DMV signs are usually about 20/40. Doc's check for 20/20. Most of the road signs are made pretty big for that reason. The doctors RX is a little bit more specific than the DMV. Think of them as guidlines, really =)

The test at the DMV is kind of a joke. I do it with one eye closed and pass just fine, but I can't see signs when I am driving. So yeah... I wouldn't trust the DMV.
