what is trainspotting? (not the heroin flick either), thanks

every train has its own specific number. This hobby started when steam trains were used and some steam trains are very fine looking. So people would watch and mark down the number of the trains they saw so they could see how many different ones they had seen. Then as steam trains started to go out people continued with this hobby, you used to be able to buy books listing all the different numbers so you could mark them off in the book but I don't know if you can still do this. It started out as a hobby for people brought up near to busy train stations/lines and progressed from there

Trainspotting is standing near a railway line and taking notes on the time and day trains go past and identifying marks on the train

It is standing by railway lines waiting for trains to go by, just to look at them, but you have to wear an anorak !

keeping tabs on train arrivals departures and engine numbers i think plus taking photos of your fav train
