How come when I tell someone who doesn't really believe in God OR.... has different religious beliefs who don't really praise God. How come when they sneeze and I say "God bless you" or "Bless you" they say thank you??...... I thought they didn't believe in God...or belong to a religion that dosn't recognize God.??

Does this mean everyone secretly beleives in God but doesnt know it yet????

As an atheist, I don't say "Thank you" if someone says "Bless you" after I sneeze, nor do I say "Bless you" if someone else sneezes. It's kind of amusing to see people's reactions. It's as if they've lost their place in a script if you don't throw the expected line at them.

Oh, and I don't believe in any god or gods, secretly or otherwise.

LOL, it means they are being polite, that's all. Telling someone who says "bless you" after you sneeze that you don't believe in a god, etc. would be tantamount to bitching at someone for opening a door for you.

What words do you use when you talk about the days of the week?

Does that mean you believe in Tyr, Odin, Thor, Frigg, and Cronus? Do you worship the Moon and Sun?

It's become a "tradition of men". It holds no religious significance but is the opposite- a superstition.

it means nothing of the sort.
bless you after a sneeze is stated because your heart skips a beat. thats why people say it.

its not a religious expression.

They are being polite and choosing not to get into a theological debate over something as simple as a sneeze. They are grateful for your well-wishes. That's it.

stop being paranoid. you blessed them and they are just saying thank you. it would take wa-ay too long to explain their spiritual beliefs after every sneeze, wouldn't it?

bless them and move on...

That is a profound question that gets asked here a lot. It could be a deep, subconscious Freudian thingy but no one knows for sure.

It's because we're being polite.

And if you say "bless you", well, it could be Zeus blessing you, and that's OK by me.
