Hi I am 16 and about 3 months ago I started to do weight training but there are 2 things that keep on bothering me. the first is that I have to cough hard every time I work out but I feel perfectly fine not sick or anything and it has been like that since I started no phlegm or anything just a dry cough and i do drink plenty of water. second I wanted to know what it means when you are doing weights and during a rep your arms get numb or when i do upper body workouts on a machine while sitting my legs get numb? thanks

I don't know the answer but I'm 45 and have never had these problems. Although I'm not a bodybuilder or in such great shape, and I've only been working out on and off for a little over a year. Perhaps you are lifting too much weight, but that wouldn't explain your legs getting numb when doing upper body workouts. Could you be putting a lot of pressure on your legs (pressing against the seat) and cutting off circulation? Anyway, I think the best thing is to see a doctor to make sure it is nothing serious. Also, hopefully you aren't using steroids or HGH and if you are using any supplements you should check with your doctor to make sure what you are taking is safe.

While your working out, your actually increasing your heart rate perhaps your coughing hard because your out of breath. Also I don't think its a good sign to have numbness, perhaps your blood/sugar level is low, try eating a banana or having a protein shake/bar before your workout. When your doing reps you should do them until your muscle fatigues, that is how it grows. Numbness could even be quite dangerous with weights. I would stop straight away. Generally the best way to increase muscle tone is to ensure your lifting a weight where you can still maintain your technique. Don't lift it if you can't. Once your technique is good, then increase the weight. You should only need to do a max of 6 reps until you feel muscle fatigue, even then that may be too many. When you feel a burning or aching sensation, thats enough.

You should get a check up. Maybe your bodies not really in shape and when you're not in shape but start lifting the most heavy weights it causes those things to happen

Sounds like a circulation problem. Are you in good cardiac shape? like can you run without getting tired easily?
