it depends on what speed sensor you are talking about. there is one on each front wheel if you have 4 wheel drive, you have an output speed sensor on the overdrive unit of your trans, and on top of the rear diff is the vehicle (or rear) speed sensor for the abs and speedometer. the output speed sensor is $20, the rear speed sensor is about $48, and the front speed sensors are a little more.

There is also a speed sensor in a differential in addition to the one in the transmission the other poster mentioned. It's in the middle on the top of the case. This is also the sensor that usually fails. They aren't that expensive and you could probably put it in yourself. Auto Zone can scan it for you too to determine which sensor. I usually don't trust the auto zone scans but in this case it would work.
The sensor in the transmission is the transmission speed sensor and the sensor in the rear end differential is the vehicle speed sensor. If you have a 4x4 you may also have sensors on the behind the front rotors.

The speed sensor is located on the lower left of the extension housing on the transmission.
They can be purchased from O'Reilly Auto Parts for $13.99-$34.99.

the main one is located on the lower part of the transmission on the extension part of it,and no they aren't too bad to replace, usually around 50 bucks will buy that one, that's the one that makes the speedometer work,I'm guessing that's the one your looking for, good luck with it.

Get a Haynes or Chilton manual.
Cost is not too exorbitant, if a new one is needed
