If you are planning on doing this, I urge you NOT to. Basically your amputating something that should naturally be there. A tail serves a purpose for ALL dogs just like an arm , a leg or a foot. It helps them balance and express body language. Im against tail docking and I think it is extremely cruel. It should be banned unless its medically necessary. The tail has nerves, tissue and bone even in a small puppy. This procedure is usually performed without any anaesthetic at between three to five days of age. Can you even IMAGINE how painful?

It's not medically necessary, but Schnauzers are among the breeds with docked tails. Since they're ratters, it may be so that the vermin they'd chase couldn't hurt their tails - tail injuries are very hard to treat without docking. If you aren't using your pup as a ratter and his/her tail is natural, I suggest leaving it.

Beacuse it looks good, I guess or so they say. I asked the breeder not to dock my dogs tail. It looks great! I think it's cruel to cut off a dogs tail.

BTW the reason why they cut off cocker spainels(my breed) tails is because they wag their tails too much. That is stupid! I would rather have my dogs long beautiful tail wag then a little stump!

Tail docking is done when the puppies are around 3 days old. If you have a puppy who has a tail...surgery with anesthesia is necessary if you want her tail docked. I would leave it long..there is no reason for you to have it docked unless you are wanting to show him.

Nowadays it is done as a breed standard, but you can ask to not have it done (but it is obviously too late for that now).
I once read that with certain breeds where the dogs have exceptionally thin tails tail docking started with the so called working dogs (like guard dogs or hunting dogs) to protect them from breaking their tails.

No way! There's no reason to do it unless you're planning to show it. I think it's inhumane and personally, i think puppies are cuter WITH their tails. There isn't really any reason i think, except for appearance purposes---- hope this helps!!!!

Some people prefer this look as well as their ears being clipped. This is most commonly how the dog is shown, if you decide against it the choice is yours.

Cause people like to be cruel.
