If you are not the bride or groom..
then just dress as u would for a formal event...
something nice as not to out dress the couple.. and not blue jeans..
You could always wear something with a jacket and if it is too dressy.. take it off after u get there..

When in doubt, go for the little black dress with your hair down and flowy. Keep the jewelry to a minimum. Carry a small clutch. Round toe platforms are definitely in this season.
Simple, elegant, and works every time!

A dress like this:
http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=277762&CategoryID=26862&LinkType=SiteAd&LinkLoc=5449&AdID=35922
http://www.anntaylorloft.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=6687&N=1200012&pCategoryId=199&categoryId=211&Ns=CATEGORY_SEQ_211&defaultColorNameFromCategory=Dark%20Chocolate&defaultSizeTypeFromCategory=Misses
would be very appropriate. Think of a dress you would wear to church or would be appropriate in a professional setting. Conservative, but not stuffy.
Do NOT wear black. It is generally not appropriate for an afternoon wedding, although chocolate brown or grey would be okay.
Try also: http://www.target.com/b/ref=sc_iw_r_2_0/602-8163718-8276616?node=144456011 for a dress at a different price point.
Anything that is a "wear to work" dress would be suitable as long as it isn't too bright, low cut, or short.
Good Luck!

It's hard to overdress for a wedding. I'd suggest something fairly dressy, yet conservative. I'd wear something like I'd wear to church or to court. A nice dress, pantsuit, or suit.

look at the invitation - the invitation tells all...if the layout..etc is very elegant then that means the wedding itself will be elegant....but ...a black dress never fails

A plain simple dress, and some nice heels or pumps.

you cant go wrong with a black dress. Since it's winter, i would wear it with a wrap or shawl and some heels.
