Okay Im 15 and just got my first pair of glasses, they are -1.25 in each eye with no astigmatism. I see a lot better with them but my parents say that I really don't need them since -1.25 doesn't seem that high.
Mind you neither of them wear glasses and my whole family has 20/20 vision... I sort of want to wear them but they say that it will make my vision worse and even showed me some websites that proves this:
http://www.geocities.com/soonsee2020/TheoryB.html
I still want to wear them though because I can see so much better! but in a way i understand what there saying cuz then ill be stuck with higher prescriptions for the rest of my lfie.... WHAT SHOULD I DO!
P.S this is my first time on Yahoo Answers so I hope im doing this right!

Thanks Nick E! I showed my parents the website and not only did it not have any references but 90% of the comments were in favour of what they believed!
Including many people citing many refrences and academic papers proving their theory!!
thanks for trying tho!!

The wbsite they found is not based on any science. There are many websites like this, mostly put up by people with no medical training. Your parents should discuss this with your eye doctor who can reassure them that wearing glasses is of benefit to you.
Wearing glasses will not make your eyes worse. Show the websites below to your parents.

-1.25 is actually a pretty good script for driving and seeing boards in school. You should only wear them as you need them.
I'm an optician, and I hate it when people say that glasses ruin their eyes and make them dependant on the RX. I have so many patients where their RX goes DOWN in time.
It's all genetics. You wear your glasses as perscribed by your doc. It will not make your eyes worse, or dependant. I've had the same RX (-1.50) since I was 19, and I'm 28 now. My parents only use reading glasses. (As everyone over 40 will)
And that is not barely the legal limit for driving. You can see 20/40 without them, it just seems like a fog.
There is only one legal RX, and that's +/ -15.00 which is legally blind.

-1.25 doesn't seem that high? I would definately wouldn't want to be walking around without glasses with that script.
The truth is without your glasses you would barely meet the legal requirements for driving and you should mention this to your parents....maybe then they will be more understanding.
Secondly...the glasses won't make your eyes worse. There are countless websites out there that claim they do...and then try to get you to buy into their magic eye exercie programs...these have been disproven time and time again. Your eyes may well get worse....but if they do it would be with or without glasses.
Your parents obviously have alot of misconceptions about glasses and its awful that these are disadvantaging you.
Show them this site...Myth # 14

EDIT:
We'll try a second time then. This article from new scientist talks about research showing that undercorrecting someone actually causes their eyesight to deterorate more quickly.
http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn3082.html
And just to clarrify my comment about driving. I practice in australia and 20/40 (or 6/12 in metric terms) is the legal limit for driving. Though after doing some research I concede that some american states have a limit of 20/70 (others are 20/40) so depending on where you live my comment may...or may not hold.

Basically the best person to inform you is your optometrist. However, for me, I have 0.25 in one eye and 1.00 in the other. Not a big problem, I can see fine without my glasses but I can't see perfect details from far. In the beginning, I only wore my glasses occasionally and like you wrote, when I did, I saw much better. With time however, I got more headaches doing this than when I first needed glasses. So, I eventually wore them more often. It's a personal choice really, if you put them on, you will see better but your eyes will get used to you wearing glasses. However, if you don't put them on, headaches will occur when you strain your eyes and force them to see forcing you to wear them. One way or the other though, your eyes will get worse with time, it's a fact of life. And yes your eyes will get used to using glasses but that dose not mean they will get worse more quickly. I have had the same prescription now for the past 10 years and I have worn my glasses all the time. One thing is for sure, you will have higher prescriptions for the rest of your life, but they won't be dramatic, and they won't change every year. You'll have to get used to them and do what your body tells you to do. If headaches are frequent, just put them on. You'll feel better and most importantly, see better!

Not to sound judgemental towards your parents, but their day is coming as well! I've worn glasses most of my life, and I would say to you- who are they to judge- if YOU see better, then that's great- but if they dont want you to have them because they dont want the added expense, shame on them! They are not justifed just because some website says whatever- your vision is an inhereted trait- and I say so because neither of my parents wore glasses either, but Mom's siblings were all very near-sighted. Many parents dont see the value in their children seeing better- being able to learn easier. I ended up in the optical field and have made a career out of my interest in how glasses are made, having learned about many different eye problems as well as helping people with the problems they have with their glasses. I hope this encourages you to stand up and see better!

I have -1.25 and my mom wont even take me to get glasses, so I guess I am inn the same boat. She doesn't think it seems that high, but I cant even see road signs when I drive.
I would wear them when you have too and explain to your parents that they are obviously not seeing what you see.

I know exactly how you feel... I got my first pair when I was 12. If they help you see then thats pretty much that. You may even be required to wear them by your local DMV when you go to get your license.
