My dad's an electrical contractor, a master. He had to train as an electrician years ago and keep taking state licensing tests. You have to do it fairly often. You pay, but it's worth it to be more than a journeyman and to be licensed, bonded, and insured. Pick any trade you are interested in and do everything in the manuals, and everything in the laws, and you will do great.

In order to obtain a contractor license you have to take a class that is approved by the state. You have to pass the class with a certain score and pass the test at the end of the class. Then you take a state board test. If you pass the state board test you are awarded a license in contracting.
It helps if you have some experience in the business such as working as a carpenter, but you don't need it to take the class or the test.
The license is wonderful because you can perform anything to do with building and charge accordingly. It opens up the world of contracting for you because you are your own boss.

not necessarily but you should be a ''jack of all trades''.
There are also different kinds of contractors which require different things which could vary by state. Check your states website.
