Many people have a room in their house they only use for important visitors. You may not, if you are in a single-wide trailer on hard-packed red clay, with a couple of blue-tick coon hounds under the front deck, but the Quality do it all the time.

Sanctuaries are like that, since the visitor is, well . . . God.

Our church uses the Sanctuary twice on Sunday. Three Narcotics Anonymous groups use it once a week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. We hope those of them who call on the Lord for help will find it. We don't consider that a sacrilege. He visits people with dirty fingernails and a monkey on their backs as often as he visits little old ladies who sing Alto in the choir.

Our social hall has lectures, Tai Chi classes and discussion groups 3 - 7 days a week.

Our administrator uses her office 5 days a week.

I used to work in a 16-story office building that was empty from 5 pm until 7 am, while people who were homeless huddled on exhaust vents.

I also worked for a cannery whose main processing area, some 3 - 4 acres of machinery, was dormant from the first heavy rain in September until Apricots started in June.

Underused is relative.

BTW, you'd look less like a dufus if you managed to click on "Check Spelling".

The buildings are somewhat important to the people, I'd say. It's hard to find a rental facility that's available every week that will hold several hundred people. We like having our own building because it means we can schedule things (meetings, fellowship events, commemorations, etc) in it whenever we need to do so. Some churches are sorely underused, I'll agree. Many others are well-used, and a few are even over-used.

Several hundred years ago, people wanted to build lavish houses of worship to show their whole-hearted devotion to God. That's how we get the European cathedrals in Spain, France, Germany, and other countries.

Even further back than that, God Himself gave Moses (and later David and Solomon) specific instructions on exactly how to build His dwelling place.

Doug, people are finding that church buildings are just that, just a building. Church can be held anywhere. You can have church in the park, or a parking lot if you wish. A building is not necessary. Too the churches are under used due to financial difficulties. Trying to keep up a church is costly. Churches are built for its people. That the entire congregation can be in one place together at one time. I hope I have helped. Blessings.

Our church buildings are used all the time. There are usually a few wards that meet in each building so they have to schedule their activities around each other. Youths in high school attend seminary early in the morning in the buildings. Youth groups have activities weekly and a lot of times they are in the buildings. Primary kids have activities in the buildings. Adults have a lot of activities, too.
There are also basketball nets in all the church buildings so a lot of guys come and just play basketball whenever.

We were suppose to have a halloween party in our building last night but it was postponed due to the smoke and the fires that are about 5 miles from the building.

A lot of people have their wedding receptions in the buildings, too.

I know several times Jewish congregations have used our buildings because we dont have crosses anywhere.
We have hosted many community service projects in many buildings.

The San Diego buildings were opened up as evacuation centers this week.

Churches are buildings people gather in to praise God. I don't know about other Churches but my church building is used every single day of the year for some reason or another.

If the church building brings one person to a closer walk with God, it has served its purpose. I guess the question could also be asked if it is the building God wants, or the building the church members want. God wants people to be the church , not just a building.

I'm not sure why you think that church buildings are underused...ours certainly isn't! we have two different congregations using our buildings-a local church was burned out a few years ago, so they use our fellowship hall for services-and there is always something going on at our church, 7 days a week-sunday services, youth groups-2 different nights-choir practices (for both churches, plus our children's choir), committee meetings, bible studies, funerals, weddings, birthday parties, community fairs, 'bread of life' ministry (a nearby bakery donates day-old baked goods (bread, rolls, etc) and anyone is welcome to stop by and get whatever they need-plus our pastor, assistant pastor, and secretary's offices...and we have an attached apartment for missionary families or visiting clergy to use, as well as for temporary emergency housing for families in crisis-such as battered spouses...the buildings are for us to worship God and do His work here in our community...but the buildings are not our church...our church is our congregation

Believers are the church there's no need for most of the buildings ..You can find others to congregate together with in any situation... 7 step sermons and organized prayer and worship I'll bet was not entirely what God intended.....

So that when you need it, Doug, it is there.
BTW, not as many of these buildings are as underused as you may think. Anyway, if you want to find underused structures around, try a local NFL football stadium.
