Jesus went to hell for 3 days and 3 night, time served for the sin of the world..The thief went to paradise which is adjacent to hell there he went til Jesus served that time then Jesus led captivity captive. That is to say he led all the saints/ believers who had died and was in paradise up to Heaven He led them..

When Jesus died He went to hell/paradise/purgatory as did the thief. Jesus preached to those who died before His birth and during His life. Those that believed ascended to heaven with Jesus after His resurrection and after He remained on earth for another 40 days

I have often wondered the same thing. I have heard it taught that those who died prior to the resurrection of Christ are the ones to rise from their graves at the second coming but the Bible is not exactly clear on it. The New Testament does say though, "that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord." II Corinthians 5:6-8
