I'm asking this question because two of my EX boyfriends who were both jerks have made jokes about the Challenger Explosion.

I enjoy a good joke as much as the next person. But "jokes" like this one are not funny. A lot of people are still sad about the Challenger disaster. A lot of people (myself included) remember exactly what they were doing and where they were when it happened. It was traumatic for the entire country. No, it wasn't on the scale of Pearl Harbor, 9/11 or the Holocaust (also not okay to joke about) but it was a tragedy that is in the collective conscious of most Americans that were alive back then. It still hurts.

If someone were to make a joke about this to me, it would tell me that I am dealing with a very insensitive person who would have no qualms about hurting me, as long as he found it funny. I wouldn't have much to do with a person like that.

I see nothing funny about making jokes about such a horrible tragedy. The world is full of sadists!!! Do you even have to ask if it's an ethical joke? Think about it. If your friend or relative was killed in that tragedy, would that be amusing to you or ethical?

How pathetically insensitive and cruel! Even on Y!A I've seen a message or two (or twenty-two) that make me wonder about a person's state of mind.

One member posted an opinion about the victims on the planes that hit the World Trade Centre, indicating that they were a bunch of cowards because they were frightened of box-cutters. That was just today.

It makes a person wonder ...

I think it's extremely bad taste for someone to make fun of tragedies that affect others.

Yes, it is in poor taste but most jokes are that we all laugh at. Think about the Helen Keller jokes and all those jokes about people with handicaps. They are just jokes and not meant to be disrespectful, but ways for people to deal with tragedy.

I work in a hospital and you should hear what we laugh about. It is the morbid sense of humor that helps people deal with reality.
You can't change what happens in life, but you can change how you deal with it.
