In addition to what "Je pense donc je suis" said, some psychosomatic illnesses have no physical basis or the physical bases can be caused from stress and anxiety or bad habits. Some people become overly concerned about every ache and pain that they have and have a low tolerance for discomfort. This has become complicated by some illnesses, such as fibromyalgia. Many doctors believe people have psychosomatic symptoms or are hypochondriacal when in fact they have early stages of fibromyalgia.

All illnesses can be considered to be psychosomatic. That is, they inevitably involve the mind's reaction (psyche) to a physical (soma) illness. However, in some illnesses, psychological factors seem to play a particularly important part. They can influence not only the cause of the illness, but can also worsen the symptoms and affect the course of the disorder. It is these illnesses that are termed psychosomatic disorders.
