PHOENIX (AP) -- When Adan Pineda Doval crashed an SUV dangerously overloaded with illegal immigrants in southern Arizona last year, 10 people died.
Now Doval, the suspected smuggler, could spend the rest of his life in prison. Now Doval, the suspected smuggler, could spend the rest of his life in prison. After just an hour of deliberation, a federal grand jury on Thursday found the 21-year-old guilty of 10 counts of transportation of illegal immigrants resulting in death, among other charges, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Phoenix announced Friday.
The conviction brings no closure to the Rev. Robin Hoover, president of Humane Borders, an Arizona group that maintains dozens of desert water stations for border-crossers.
"It's a lot of lost life all the way around to be lamented," he said. "It's the natural result for our system, but the system's broken."
He said immigration enforcement has pushed border crossers to more remote, dangerous parts of the desert and has caused smugglers and their cargo to act more recklessly.
"We shouldn't be in an environment where we're throwing spikes under tires," he said. "We don't need to be in a situation where someone has to spend their life in prison ... All 10 of those people should have been able to pursue their life dreams."
