uuugh! My husband won't let me call the police. He says someone else already has by now and we should just stay out of it.

Yes - call 911 and advise them that you heard 8 shots, how long ago and from what direction.

Well by now obviously it is too late but I will give my thoughts for future reference.

I certainly think you should have called immediately. While I understand people's concerns for retribution if they call the police I dont think this type of situation is one of those to be concerned. You may want to think through other situation if you are really concerned at backlash but in most cases that probably is not likely. Also you could call in anonymously if you really wanted to (although the dispatchers will get your information).

I always say that people have no right to complain that the police are not doing their jobs if they will not do their part and report problems. You can not always assume that someone esle has called. While it is likely in this case that someone else did multiple calls may help to narrow down the area and or may confirm a previous call.

As for "minding your own business" I think that gunshots in your neighborhood is your business. It could have been just someone shooting randomly in the air but that can be dangerous too, or it might have been a drive by shooting, who knows, but it certainly is something that the police should look into.

It is everyone's civic duty to report problems to the police and anyone who doesn't believe so has no right to complain when police are not taking care of the problem. I know that there are certain situations, especially in certain areas, where you need to seriously consider your own well being regarding concerns of retribution, but this is probably not one of those.

Yep, by the time I saw this question it's 24 min later, but call anyway. If everybody thought somebody has called by now, maybe no one will call.
I shoot too, and like your husband I can hear a noise and go, "what was that?". But when I hear gunfire I know it!

Uh, yes.. call the police.

Even if someone else has called. More calls mean they believe it more. Also, your call saying they are coming from such and such a direction (along with other calls) may narrow down the location.

Somebody could be laying somewhere bleeding to death.

THE MORE RESPONSE FROM CITIZENS TO CALL, GIVES THE POLICE AN APPROXIMATED GRID PATTERN, FROM WHERE THE CALLS ORIGINATED, THEN A BETTER POSSIBLE PINPOINT OF THE EXACT LOCATION ITSELF.
