what did it feel like and how long did it last?

I have had Sciatica for over 20 years. It is caused from a nerve being pressed on in the lower spine---usually lumbar. Often it is caused by degenerative disc disease or bulging discs.

The pain runs down the back of your thigh
towards your knee or even further. I've had sciatica so bad that my butt hurt and I could barely sit without being in excruciating pain. Sometimes it can feel like it is burning and gnawing.

The length of time that you experience the sciatica has to do with what is causing it.

I've found that over the years the pain comes and goes. I have two herniated discs and one bulging disc. When the area becomes swollen (from working out too much or moving the wrong way) the sciatica comes back.

At the first sign of the pain, I usually take a Motrin and alternate ice packs with a heating pad. I go for deep tissue massage as well as chiropractics. They used to recommend that you stay in bed when the pain gets really bad--the theory is now to move around. The sciatica also brings about muscle spasm (which can be as nearly painful)

In very stubborn cases, docs will perform an epidural nerve block. I've had about 6.
When I am totally free of pain, I work out in the gym...trying to increase the tone of my stomach and back.

If the pain lasts more then a week, I would suggest making an appointment to see your doctor to find out what is causing the sciatica. He may want to send you to an Orthopedist who may recommend an MRI.

Normally, I would not answer a question like this as my expertise is generally in medication but I had severe sciatica while I was pregnant with my 3rd child (after having had twins) and I had sciatica so bad that I was finding it difficult to walk. I tried massage therapy and physical therapy and could not take medication
I went to the chiropractor and the pain was instantly relieved. My hips and lower back were out of alignment because I had carried twins the year before. On occasion a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) can also work but they usually only work on one joint at a time - the chiropractor will do your whole back which works faster. Anyone who does not believe in chiropractors will tell you they are quacks - don't listen.
I don't necessarily believe that chiropractors can cure things like diabetes but they can definitely relieve some types of back pain especially if a pinched nerve is involved which is usually the cause of sciatica. Try a reputable chiropractor ASAP!

Sciatica usually does not go away. My father has this and he is 56 years old. He visits a chiropractor and says it feels good for a few weeks before he has to go back. There is surgery to try and correct the problem but any surgery is risky and may not be worth the reward or too pricey for some people. Ever since my father got Sciatica he cannot climb ladders or do some of the things he used to be able to do with youth. Hope this helps. Good luck!

I've been battling sciatica for close to a decade, after a minor car accident, and I had tried everything the doc threw at mepills, injections, special mattresses This guide was extremely eye opening and within one week of the regimen you gave me I can barely feel any discomfort. You have no idea how much of a relief it is to be finally getting rid of a pain I've had to bear for so many years.

When i was pregnant which wasnt long ago in my 2nd trimester i got bad bad lower back pain, i went to 3 doctors and they all said different one said it was sciaticia and one said the lumbar disc and another said he had no idea, but it hurt for a couple of weeks, they said more than likely sciatica from the weight they said to get up and work it off and they just made it worse if it was i really think that rest is your best option as panadol, panadien, nurofen and a chiropractor did nothing, it was very bad pain and i wouldnt want it again.

Oh yes!Got it at the moment & it's hurting like hell.Had a Caudal Epidural 2 weeks ago which injects a steriod into the lower spinal area(was knocked out for this)so have been waiting for a miracle ever since, alas its not kicking in yet & pain is increasing again.Had managed to come off all the strong painkillers cause they really have bad side effects(Tramadol is MORPHINE based by the way)& block up your natural bodily functions(if you know what I mean). Anti inflammatorys help to reduce the swelling caused by the slipped disc as long as your not asmatic(wrong spelling)they can make you wheezey though,so check first with doc/pharmacist.Diazepam works as a muscle relaxant, but make you very dopey!I was away with the fairys! Try a Tens machine which gives pulses of tiny shocks to the affected nerves & certainly helps the pain(better than pills). Alcohol will make any drugs less effective,so don't try mixing both! Have been looking at trying the Bowen Technique which sounds like a more comfortable therapy than Osteopathy, maybe you could look that up too? Hope you find relief soon,it wears you down after a while, good luck.

Shooting pain from the hip down the leg, tingling in the feet and toes. It is caused by nerves in the lower back being compressed or 'pinched'. I've experienced it, and when it flares up, I can't do my job until it calms down. Anti-inflammatories and muscle relaxers used with alternating ice and heat will relieve the pain, and as soon as possible, get into a good stretching routine to keep calf, hamstring and back muscles from getting too tight and putting your lower spine out of alignment.
