Asides from good grades and being physically fit, I also am an active member of FBLA, student council, and chess club.

USMA prefers people with leadership positions within these clubs, but in my school you really have to be outstanding. (Like having a 4.0 gpa and absolute commitment, aside from being substantially popular)

What do you suggest I start doing? (Currently in 10th grade)

Join the Boy Scouts. Making Eagle is a big thing at all the academies. Becoming the Senior Patrol Leader will help also. Go to http://www.scouting.org to find a nearby Scout troop. You do not need previous Scouting experience. You will need complete everything prior to your 18th birthday. That is a very hard cut off.

Some Scouts have made Eagle by the time they are 13, so it can be done in 2 years, so if you are under 16, you have time, but you need to hustle. Believe me, the rewards are worth it.

BTW, West Point loves Eagle Scouts.

It's little late to start boy scouts because the top positing is Eagle Scout. You can still go, don't get me wrong, but it takes years to Eagle Scout. My brother made Eagle, it's a honor that follows you all through life. My oldest brother was a boy scout then a scout leader. He helped my other brother with Eagle. I was also a camp nurse and learned a lot.
It's not to late for you to begin volunteering in the community, That too will can become part of a record. Become a scout leader and you will be in. Your old enough, I think, to be a volunteer fireman. Don't worry, they won't make you go into burning buildings. Just have to help put them out.

Contact your Senators and Representatives, see about working for them and ask for sponsorship.

You can also go into the Army, with good grades and good eyesight go for Warrant Officer Flight Training, and try for the "Green to Gold" program.
