I have a 7-8 year old papillon who is a female. she has a hard time hearing.?

I took her to the vet and they gave some ear mite treatment to put in her ears twice a day. He also gave us some cleaning solution to put in her ear. We dug out alot of junk that was black and stringy. Is that ear mites?

probably not unless your pap is outside all the time or has been around another animal with ear mites. it is probably a yeast infection and some "ear mite" medication contains ingredients that will treat yeast infections as well.

ear mites are a little crab like bug that can invade the ears and other parts of your pets body.they can cause infection from their bites and is a yucky blackish brown gunk that builds up in the ear.it can also be a yeast infection that i thought was mites in my pup until the vets test showed yeast.other than the ear meds and cleaning solution i have put my dog in the shower and used the hose and flushed the ears out with warm water after they shake the excess out apply the medication and ,make sure its in the ear canal.pull your dogs ear up like a rabbit and put it in while her ear it straight up so she will get the full benifit of the drug.before you put in new medication clean her ear first so the old gunk will come out. it can cause your dog to go deaf because of the impacted ear canel. after it has begun to heal and start cleaning out she might get some of her hearing back, if not she has a great sense of smell and sight so just talk to her and give her hand signals so she can see you. hope all goes well.

It sounds like it has been a long time since her ears have been cleaned. I have two Paps too, I just lost my 14 year old female to cancer. Keep treating her and follow up with your vet. The vet will usually clean out their ears at their check ups for a small fee as well as cutting their nails and cleaning their anal glands.
