It's not great. It's best for your number to be under 200. You have to be careful thoughm because unless you change some of your eating habits, it could slowly creep up higher over time. Avoid those animal fats as much as possible.

220 is high. However, you have two types of Cholesterol. One is good and one is bad. Find out what your good cholesterol is. If your Good Cholesterol is 1/3 - 1/4 of your bad cholesterol, (meaning 55-66 points) you are okay. It doesn't mean you can keep binging on fried foods and how you currently eat, but your less likely to have a heart attack tomorrow.

Remember cholesterol is the building blocks of all your hormones, so don't get crazy going low fat and non fat. Just eat reasonable, lean meats, whole grain breads, etc. Make sure you get cardiovascular exercise at least 30 minutes 4-6 times per week. When you eat protein meat, use your hand to guide you. With the meat about an inch thick your portions are - size of your palm red meat, palm to first knuckle poultry, and length of your hand fish.

Remember to get 5 or more servings of veggies and fruit a day (a serving is roughly the size of a medium apple or tangerine). If doing all this does not lower your bad cholesterol after a few months, and your good cholesterol is at a low ratio, talk with your doctor about taking more dramatic steps to lessen it.

Also, don't be afraid to speak with a naturalpathic doctor. There are specialist that specialize in hormones (which is built by your cholesterol), and as you get older and your testosterone drops your cholesterol will naturally get higher. These doctors can help you work a regimen that is realistic and healthy, and can get your bad cholesterol below 200.

200-210 is the limit (a bit different in men and women)...so 220 is a bit over the limit..What's really more important is how they arrived at the 220...in other words, what's the HDL (good cholesterol) as compared to the LDL (bad cholesterol)as well as the triglycerides. these 3 factors make up your total cholesterol...

It's high, yes... 180-200 is borderline and anything over 200 is bad. Almost as important is your good/bad cholesterol ratio in addition to the overall number. My total number is 130-something, which is good, but my ratio isn't so great (I forgot what it is but it's not as good as it should be). Like others said, monitor your diet and it probably wouldn't hurt to get advice from your doctor.
