I have flown to Ireland twice and various other European destinations, plus Russia (that was a 10 hour flight, I think).

If your flight is overnight, you'll probably get dinner shortly after take-off and a breakfast-type snack shortly before landing. They will probably show two movies, which you can look up before your flight on the airline's web site. You'll have the option of buying headphones so you can hear the movies.

Drink plenty of water; bring your own reading materials; bring an mp3 player; if you like doing crossword puzzles, etc., bring some of those as well. If you are able to, try to get your seat in the bulkhead or emergency exit aisles (there is generally more leg room). I usually bring a portable DVD player and my own DVDs, along with my iPod. Because the flights I've always been on have been overnight, I usually sleep for most of the flight (and because it will be the next morning when I get off the plane and there is a whole day to get through).

I also recommend (and I'm not sure if other travelers would agree or disagree with this, but it's always worked for me) exchanging some US dollars at the US airport before you leave. When you land in Germany, everyone will swarm the exchange bureau in that airport. It's more of a convenience thing I do so I can leave the airport after gathering my luggage. I avoid waiting in line ... and I have some money in my pocket to hold me over until I hit an ATM or another exchange bureau.

Have fun!

Boredom, no sleep, discomfort. it is NOT fun. The only thing that keeps you going is the anticipation of getting there.
Like everyone else said, bring something to keep you occupied...Prepare for about a $10 fee for some headphones so you can watch movies. (Stewardess brings them around)... But how many movies can you watch?
A good hint was to trade some of your money here in America so you don't have to do it at the airport when you get there.
Not a lot, but enough to cover you to get to your destination... It usually isn't a problem but you'll be covered if the line is too long.

Long flights are fun. It is the prelude to a new adventure in another country.
I have been to Australia twice and I am getting too old for the long flights.
Drink lots of water , get up frequently to move about, do not overeat, wiggle your toes and feet to keep circulation going. If you have feet that swell easy I suggest a compresion stocking and not to remove shoes.
Bring something to read...magazines may be available but the great service has long gone and the air waitress will say yes to everything but forget to return.
Don't constantly reach above to dig in your carry on bag. It is annoying to everyone. Be polite.
Have fun when you arrive and immerse yourself into a new culture.

Boredom, stiff body, bad food...

Bring books, music. They'll probably have films for you to watch. Be sure to get up and move around frequently; I always go to the back area where the flight attendants hang out and do my stretches. Drink lots of water so you don't get dehydrated. Try to sleep.
