Yes, you can have AAA roadside assistance. They have different memberships some of which are Basic (covered up to 5 miles of towing), Towrider (15 miles), Plus (unlimited).

I dont advise people to rely on AAA for towing, or jump starts/lock outs, only because if youre ever in an emergency and need towing assistance, most places wont put you as top priority (you'll get a 1 hour ETA, if not longer), becuase they dont pay wrecker/towing companies hardly anything to do them, unless theyre super slow and dont have much going on.

Aside from that, the other benefits are great. I dont want to discourage you if youre thinking about using their services.

There are also other roadside companies such as Quest, USAC, Mercedes Road Side (if you have a mercedes - obviously), Gieco, Allstate, OnStar, etc. You can check with your dealership also. Most car makes have their own roadside company also.

Yes you can be a AAA member and not carry their insurance.
But just to correct some others who state AAA doesn't write their own insurance and serve as brokers....Auto Club of So. California writes insurance for part of the U.S. (such as Texas, Hawaii, Conneticut, Maine), California State Auto Assocation (aka AAA Northern California/Nevada/Utah) write insurance for atleast 18 states (including Oregon, Alaska, Oklahoma, Montana, Ohio, parts of NY & PA, Indiana), and AAA Michigan writes their own. Both AAA clubs out of California partner with other AAA clubs across the nation to provide a AAA branded product to consumers nationwide.
AAA is not just about roadside service and travel...they offer a full line of insurance products from auto to home to renters to condo to motorcycle to life to personal umbrella and the rates are quite competitive.

Absolutely. I have been a AAA member for years, and I have never carried AAA insurance. As a member you are entitled to AAA discounts, and roadside assistance. You can also use them for certain DMV services (better than waiting in line at the regular office), and Travel services. Plus you get Westways magazine which is pretty cool.

Absolutely. I have been an AAA member for 20 years; and have another insurance carrier for my car.
AAA is travel and road insurance, has nothing to do with insuring the car against accidents etc.

Absolutely - I have Mercury and still carry AAA for discounts, reliable towing and all the travel benefits. The 2 services are separate. Good Luck!

Absolutely. AAA does not really do Insurance - they team up with insurance Carriers to provide discounted products for thier clients. You can still get cheaper Insurance by shopping around. However, if you have AAA make sure you use it for other discounts. Our favorite is movie tickets which are 30% off.
