I was ticketed for driving too close to a police motorcycle. Should I pay the ticket or fight it? If I am found guilty, does anybody have an estimate of how much my insurance will go up in New York?

To elaborate: The police officer was driving approximately 7 miles slower than the speed limit, and quickly slowed down when I decelerated. Seems like entrapment, but it seems like there probably isn't much I can do about that. Does anybody know how this will impact my insurance rate (New York)?

The best way to fight this stuff is not to do stupid stuff in the first place. Get in the habit of driving like a nice guy who respects the rules of the road.

You will have a much more harmonious life if you can stay out of getting tickets in the first place, let alone having a life with much lower risk of getting in an accident.

The way I see it, there are only two ways of handling this that will avoid insurance finding out about this ticket. First of all, you're going up against a police officer. 99% of the time they win (they are the law). If you plead not guilty in court, they will set a trial date, if the cop shows up for trial you lose. Your only hope there is that he don't show up, but they usually do.

Your best bet would be to pay the extra fee to have a traffic lawyer get it reduced to a lesser crime and pay the fine and costs. This will cost more up front, but in the long run it will save you money on your insurance premiums.

It's gona be a TAD difficult to fight in court against a cop that you were following too closely....... If you were tailgating a motorcycle (COP OR NOT) that is a very stupid thing to do...and as for a fine and ticket... PAY IT... you are guilty.... a cop wouldn't issue a ticket for following too closely if you WERE NOT.... and in the future, if you are going to ride up behind somebody in ANY vehicle, next time, TRY NOT TO MAKE IT BE A COP!!!! Insurance MAY go up a few hundred or MAY not even go up at all---if it's your first offense---AND, the ticket may be reduced in court...

Pay the ticket. It is not worth trying to fight, especially when it is a he says she says battle. In that situation, the judge will listen to a cop over you. Just stay at least two car lengths behind the cop in front of you from now on.

Were you guilty? If so....just pay the fine and get over it. If you felt you were not following too closely, fight it. One ticket should not raise your rates. If this is number two or more....then you can expect to pay more.

If you don't have any good grounds to fight it, you're probably not going to get anywhere. Just pay it. If it's your first ticket, insurance may give you a break.

Following too close or "Tailgating" is one of the top causes of accidents. To fight it when it was the cop that you were tailgating is like telling your mom you didn't take the ice cream bar while the remains are still smeared all over your face. Lots of luck.
