The conditions for both visas are the same - you need to show that there is suitable accommodation available, that he will not need benefits, and that you have met and intend to stay together.
You can apply for a spouse visa after getting married abroad. It lasts for two years, after which he could apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain if you are still together. He could work immediately on arrival.
The fiance visa is valid for six months, it is to allow him to come and get married here; after the marriage, he would apply for Further Leave to Remain for two years, and then for ILR; he would not be allowed to work until FLR was granted.
So the spouse visa cuts out one application, and saves a few hundred pounds, but means you have to marry abroad and then hope they accept your application. Generally I would recommend the spouse visa route, but it's up to you.
Usually, you would need to be in regular work and have your own place to live (rented is fine), but there are other possibilities. You should talk to a Citizens Advice Bureau or solicitor if you are still unsure about the procedures, or if your application is not straightforward. It is essential that all procedures are followed exactly, cutting corners will cause you grief.
I would advise you to try to be patient. The visa may take from few weeks to a few months. If you are refused, you can appeal to the court. It is better to take longer and be surer. It is never a good idea to rush into marriage. (Lecture over!)

A fiance visa is a short term visa that usually lasts 6 months. This allows you time to make arrangements to be married. After the 6 months are up, he would need to apply for indefinite leave to remain.
If your bf is back home, you would have to marry him in his home country if you wanted to apply for a spouse visa. I think it's easier to apply for a fiance visa and then get married back in Britain. That's what me and my husband did and he's now permanently settled here.
Good luck : )

You make it sound so simple and it is not. Before getting a Fiance or any other Visa you have to satisfy a strict criteria. The laws have changed dramatically and so has the price of the Fiance Visa currently £500 which is non refundable on refusal. All the information is on the govt web site by typing in the search bar British Embassy and the country of your friends home. You will have to have known each other for some time and each will have visited the countries you live in.Financial guarantees will have to be in place and accomadation.Suppose you could go and live with him in his country the exact question you will be asked on interview. In short forget it in particular if the country concerned is in eastern europe.

spouse visa is when your married first and fiance visa is when you plan to get married in UK. When i brought my husband to the UK it was on a settlement visa (spouse). If you need any further details please email me
It took us 2 months from date of handing documents in until interview but that was 7 years ago now. Things are quicker now is some countries but does depend on country you are applying in
