If you pay to "adopt" a dog, can that be written off at tax time?
I was told that it was like a donation, because you are giving money to a non profit organization.
Just curious.

Michelle, the dog was not taken care of. He was running a fever, had worms, and an upper respitory infection AND all the shots had to be done over again, because they were not licensed to do so and no vet would recognize their services.
He was fed and had a roof over his head, he still cost over $400 just to adopt.

It matters how the shelter classifies the adoption. Is it a $100 "donation" to adopt or is it an "adoption fee"? They can give you that answer. The shelter has to be a registered not-for-profit organization as well for it to be considered a donation.

Note, too, that any tax-deductible donations can only be listed on your tax return if you're itemizing your deductions. If you're a homeowner and have mortgage interest and property taxes to deduct, then you'd itemize. If you're a renter and do not having things to itemize then you'd take the standard deduction.

It the organizaton a 501c3 non profit? I was under the impression that if this was the case, yes. However, to be certain, you should consult an accountant.

My prior organization gave adoptors receipts for the amount of their adoption fee. The dog was basically free, they were donating to help keep the organization running.

did you adopt from a rescue? Most reputable rescue organizations will tell you that your adoption fee is considered a donation therefore CAN be written off. You will need a receipt from the rescue organization with their tax id # on it to submit with your return.

If it is a registered 501(c)3 organization, you might. If you know an accountant that does taxes, they could give you a better answer. However, if it's not a 501(c)3, I think you would not be able to.

Truthfully, it depends on how the receipt is written. The one I got when getting a cat from the pound was written as a "donation" of $60.00.

No, you are paying for a service. Those animals don't get fixed, fed, and healthy for nothing.

If you were to give the shelter money and receive nothing, yes, it is a donation. But, with tax laws you will not get that much money back anyways.

hmmm... I doubt it.

I don't think it is considered a donation if you are getting something in return.

Sorry I don't think so. It was basically a purchase.
