Yeah folks with the "There's no such thing" response. Might want to check out the other answers below, Super Atheists and Rorty's answers in particular.

Ok Rorty - lay it on me man. You got some sources for this? I'm a history buff and a news junkie, and since i identify myself as an atheist i might as well figure out what the heck came before in order to figure out whats happening socially now.

I often refer to new wave atheism, such as the works of Dawkins, Harris, Dennett, and Hitchens. The literature has become so popular, publishing companies have wrestled with its appropriate classification. Is it philosophy, cultural criticism, religion? It has been considered a subset of religion in book publishing and book stores.

The last time we had such a force of literature and energy was in the late 1800s and early 20th century with Bertrand Russell, Sigmund Freud, Karl Marx, etc. We might consider this Enlightenment or Modern atheism.

The actual beliefs have not changed. In fact, Dawkins' God Delusion is not substantially different from Voltaire's critique of religion. The ideas are old. The difference is the new political force behind it, mostly as a reaction against what seems to be excesses or dangers of religion, specifically 9/11, creationism in schools, Bush's rhetoric, etc.

Edit: Sources for what? Email me if you want to clarify.

The New Atheism is the work of the New Atheists - Dawkins, Dennett, Harris, Hitchens etc.

More a new putsch than a new movement, it was started a few years ago now, triggered by (among other catalysts) 9/11, which awoke large numbers of the public to just how dangerous religion really is.

The main thrust is the the former environment of fake 'respect' for religious belief is gone. It was a silly, false idea to begin with, as neither side really liked the other at all.

The time has come - religion has had an easy ride for too long, and has never deserved it. All of its fundamental tenets have already been demolished to any rational person's satisfaction, and it's time to let the public know and roll back the ignorance.

New Atheism is, as someone stated before, more like a new wave of atheism. There isn't any particular change in viewpoint, but rather a new popularization of the idea of atheism.

Dawkins, Harris, Dennett. I'm sure, as an atheist, your familiar with their names. And i'm quite sure there's someone out there talking about the "Unholy Triumvirate" as i've seen some Christians call them.

But mainly those three are responsible for the new wave.

New atheism is simply the new atheists such as Richard Dawkins, David Mills, etc. Old atheism has been around forever, and just includes people who don't believe in god. It's hard to put it into words.

EDIT:
You know what? Just slash everything I just said above. There is no such thing.

Theism, for sure! Atheists deny that God exists -- hence they must have a minimum of heard about some type of divine being in order to be adverse to it! P.S. "A babe is born with none perception in any God in any respect".....this does no longer make the newborn an atheist yet an unbeliever. Atheists go with to disclaim that a god -- any god -- exists. it really is diverse from an infant in simple terms having no understand-how -- nor understanding, for a 5 year previous (or 6 or 7 or...) can't be an atheist both. It comes right down to creating an recommended decision on one's own to trust or no longer. by the way -- for what its well worth...If I were President i ought to truly uphold an atheist's good to no longer worship or trust. ought to I vote for a Presidential candidate who's an atheist? as long as he/she is qualifed to run this u . s . a .. and that i ought to assume that atheist President to uphold and preserve my good to worship in my Catholic faith brazenly. I in no way change into an alarmist about Barak Obama by some potential being a Muslim...i ought to have voted for him besides. an recommended Catholic.

The "new" atheism is the belief that they must disprove God.

The "old" atheism is simply a non-belief in God.

There is a big difference. Richard Dawkins and people like him think it is their mission to disprove God.

He and many others today are not atheists, they are anti-theists.

Sounds like the distinction between weak atheism, negative atheism, soft atheism, and skeptical atheism.... anything to break us into groups, like Christianity is... keep your claws off atheism!

Old atheists enter into brothels by their right steps or feet

whereas the new ones dont go to a brothel because they are converting church women into their belief and marrying them... There is no any other difference....

no such thing. atheism is just the belief that there is no god. simple as that. no new or old versions.

As far as I'm aware there is no difference. Atheists are atheists, old or new.
