I think the rabies vaccine is the same regardless of the sex of the cat, but it definitely sounds like a boy to me! And if the cat still has balls after they said they neutered the cat, then it doesn't sound like they know what they're doing.

It was the same thing when I got my cat from the Humane Society. They said I had adopted a girl and that her sutures would need to come out in a few weeks. But when I got the cat home, I was pretty sure it was a boy. I brought "her" back for "her" check-up, and sure enough, it was a boy. They had marked the wrong box! A simple snafu that has led to him becoming a little neurotic, but otherwise ok.

Check your cat, if the lower stomach area wasn't shaved and doesn't have a Frankenstein looking stitches line there, you don't have a female. Yep, the round things under his butt were his balls and were emptied out when the vet neutered him.
So if the certificate is wrong, take it back to the place and tell them the wrong box was marked, that your cat was neutered and is male, not female.

Its a boy, and on the rabies certificate thing it does matter, should the problem arise, it wouldn't be valid because it says the wrong sex. Go and get the certificate changed.
As for having the wrong surgery done? Not possible in a spay neuter proceedure.

Most likely they checked off the wrong box. There is NO way they could have done the wrong surgery...if it was a male, he would have no uterus when they opened him up! Females have a suture line on the lower belly, males don't. Females have the belly area shaved, males don't. I think your cat is boy and always has been.

It doesn't matter at this point since the cat was desexed. Your cat is gender neutral now. Neither female or male. They did the right procedure though. For spaying, htey shave a large portion on the belly. When my male was neutered, nothing was shaved on him and he looked like nothing was done to him.
But yes, he was a boy.

Sounds like they did the wrong thing to the cat. Maybe you could find another vet to look at the cat.
PS-- Check out Elaine M's answer a top contributor. The answer just before me. I think she has the best answer that makes sense to me.

No way the vet made a mistake. You mistakenly thought it was a male. That happens all the time, expecially in kittens. Chalk it up to a leaning experience. Good luck.

Just take the cerificate back and have them give you one that is correct. No need for a panic or anything.
