~~~ Hamburger Helper lends a helping hand....that's what the commercials say anyway. ☺ I used to believe every commercial I saw on TV. I don't anymore. ☻ The stuff looks much more appealing on TV and it never looks the same as the picture on the box ,once it's done. All you have to do is burn about a pound of hamburger meat then throw in the contents of the box,and maybe some milk & water ,and wait for it to boil over. Wipe off the stove ,turn the smoke detector off and it's probably done. It tastes kinda awful,BUTT!! & this is a big BUTT!!.....you only dirtied one pan. That's how Hamburger Helper lends it's "Helping Hand." ☺ ~~~
There are many varieties now, but generally:
brown the ground beef in a skillet and drain the fat.
Add the water, packet of sauce flavoring, and pasta.
Simmer on low until the pasta is cooked. Set aside for 2 minutes until the sauce sets up.
There is a serious lack of vegetable and color and the same dish made from home-made ingredients probably costs less (if that's imaginable) and takes an equal amount of time.
However, I grew up in a hamburger helper free household. My dad said it was food for pigs. I actually kind of like some of the flavors and some nights a hot meal that fills the hole is just the thing.
When I am lazy enough to make this meal, everyone likes it and I slice a tomato and cucumber to serve on the side with salt or dressing. I do make everyone swear a vow of silence before allowing them to eat.
Each hamburger helper has its own directions and all you need is water and hamburger! You can substitute ground turkey, chicken, pork or even vege "meat" crumbles if you don't want the beef. Serve along side a vege and add a dessert and you'll have a complete meal.
Oh, sure it's fine in a pinch, don't let the snobs tell ya it's not.
Geez, anyone can eat gourmet, anyone can eat the helper.
When my kids were young they loved the lasagna, just cook up the beef, add the water and packet and noodles (follow the directions), we would have it with corn and a salad.
I still made homemade lasagna, of course, but the helper was an easy quick busy family night dinner.
No, it's not. It's low in vitamins, protein, fibre and essential minerals. It's basically starch, fat, salt and sugar and you shouldn't even be eating it with hamburger added.
