back in the day they didnt just give out awards for putting the toilet seat down and eating all your chow.

And the medal of honor? Only the greatest honor a soldier could earn... its not handed out to dirtbags.

Yes Sir,

He was a great soldier. He lied about his age to get in. In one of the battles with the Germans; Audie Murphy climbed on to of an empty tank that was hot from being shot up and the crew had to Bail out of it. Audie standing on the top of the hot tank; took in hand the machine gun on the tank while the other soldiers could escape. Another time (I don't remember the count) but he had captured a bunch of Germans single handily and led them in to others. Sounds odd but he did it.

There is a movie long time ago that Audie played his self in that tells the story. I wish I could think of the name of the movie maybe I'll thing of it. If I do I will give you the name of it.
With the help of one of your answers reminded me of the Movie To Hell and Back. If I remember right.

There is an answer that wonders about Audie Murphy about the movies or military first. Audie Murphy grew up a farm boy in Texas and lost his mom at an early age. He took care of his brothers and sisters as best he could. The Military was before his movies. Hope I have been of some help.

Absolutely, his record speaks for itself.

Many others on this board list his lack of a good conduct medal as a negative. Remember that Audie was only in from June 1942 - September 1945 and was an officer at the end of that. Officers are expected to have good conduct and are not eligible for the award.

Looking on the Audie Murphy site, he DOES have one. It makes sense to only have one as it is authorized for 3 years of good conduct. Of course during war time, the unit can issue one each year, but that is up to the commanding officer.

Last, to be promoted to officer without any formal education says a whole lot. Murphy showed the necessary leadership skills and his men loved him. Reminds me of someone else - Omar Bradley, was he a good soldier? I would have to say yes to a General of the armies and Chairman of the Joint chiefs.

To your answer, was Audie a good soldier. This depends on which side you are on.
The Germans would have loathed him for his gallantry, However the western world adored him because he put his life in jeopardy for democracy.
Not many people could lay claim to such heroism.
Admittedly, not everyone is cut from the same cloth as Audie Murphy, and it does make you wonder how some people are brave in spite of danger.
I guess it was a good thing that he was able to thumb his nose at officialdom, or his men may have perished. Like how cool is that. People like Audie are unique.

I am also waiting patiently on Audies' military background.
Interested to know which came first, the acting or the military.
I am an Australian, and very little is portrayed on TV about him, although every Saturday afternoon at the movie theatres, you could bank on an Audie Murphy film.
Maybe some of Audies' family may see his thread ?

Depends on how you are asking.

Was he a GOOD soldier? No, demonstrated by the fact that he never recieved the easiest award to get, the Good Conduct Medal

Was he a good SOLDIER? HELL YES!

You should read his book, "To Hell and Back". Murph was an instinctive fighter, who really didn't like getting all the awards and decorations. After the war, however, this fame paid off handsomly for him.

He was awarded all the medals the Army has ..except for one. The "Good Conduct" medal. He was a rebel. He balked at the orders he received. He resented Officers. All he did was "kick a**". My kinda' guy.
