Yes, the piano is considered a musical instrument. It is more widely classified as a percussion instrument due to the hammers hitting the strings inside when you press a key... but since it HAS strings, some consider it a string instrument.

You know, as a piano player (by ear), I just thought it was considered an instrument because it did play 'music'. I had no idea that it was considered at times a percussion, and or string instrument. Good question here. I just learned something new! :-)

yes. it plays music.

no, it's wrong to even consider the piano a string instrument. i'm a string player as well so i know what instruments fall into the 'strings' category - the piano doesn't. just because it has strings doesn't mean it's a string instrument. that's a common misconception that beginner musicians have. i myself thought it was a string instrument many years ago until i realised that it wasn't. a more accurate classification would be keyboard or tuned percussion.

Like the Organ it is unique and thereby hard to classify
in general terms ---i suppose all of us laymen think of it as
a musical instrument (because it produces music ? )

Composers and Arraangers on the other hand would
give it a more "professional" opinion---and I am sure
a Piano Tuner would be most adamant about it's
classification !

He/She would say that it was a tuned Percussion
Instrument ---

with emphasis on the word "Tuned" !
