Could a FMJ round from a .50 bmg round penetrate the armor of a MODERN (i know it can shred older ones) light armored vehicle like the military uses today?
I saw a few at an airshow and the armor looked like about half an inch of rolled steel, i don't think it could stop one, do you?

Yes it can, A 50 cal round will easily rip through half an inch of steel, especially what they make the lightly armoured vehicles out of, im in the army and the Hmmwv is made of aluminum, the body, hood is fiberglass..... a 50 call will destroy that thing even at 1000 meters....

Chew it up like a tin can. There is an applique armor available, as Army Dog said, but that adds weight that slows the vehicle and makes it unable to be transported yada yada yada.

The entire LAV concept was designed and intended to patrol the backwoods roads in Germany et al. There was no need for serious protective armor because mobility defeats overwhelming firepower every time. Knowing where the enemy was and being able to get there fast was the intention.

The Gulf, there aren't that many roads so the speed really doesn't quite cut it....the enemy uses weapons that your policy makers didn't forsee....and you don't know who or where your enemy is. The applique armor is supposed to be rated up to an RPG-7 hit....but it's pretty much like piling sandbags on your hull and hoping it's enough.

standard 1/2 inch armor plate won't stop the .50 BMG. reactive armor will, as will the better armor on the main battle tanks. I haven't seen the specs on the new L.A.V. armored personnel carrier but I suspect it won't get thru it's armor.

It would probally peirce a Hummer with little or no armor. As for say an APC Styker they have special armor and The armor suite has been made lighter and stronger designed to stop 14.5mm armor-piercing machine-gun rounds and 152mm artillery fragments.
