Typically, debuntantes are about 17 to 18 years old, they are young women being introduced to polite society. Debutante balls or cotillions are still big stuff down in the South. In the Mexican culture, "quinceneras" are the celebration of young woman's physical and spiritual entry in to adulthood. This is done when a girl is fifteen and it involves a mass and blessing and a cotillion/party afterwards.

A girl would attend her debutante ball..or coming-out ball..during the London season after she finished her education, which would be the in the Spring. Usually she would be between sixteen and nineteen years of age but if, for some reason, it was not possible for her to be brought out for the long season then she might have her debut during the autumn season instead. Even as late as the fifties the whole coming out business was highly formalised and included, for those who could afford it and had the contacts, being presented to the Queen in formal court dress..ie, white on white. A girl who left school early, or before her parents were ready or able to bring her out, might be send to a finishing school in France or Switzerland to learn how to be ..well, a lady and mistress of a household. She would be taught such life enhancing skills as how to balance a check-book, how to interview and hire or dismiss her servants, how to walk, dance, what to talk about, who to seat where at her dinner table after she married and how to write letters and thank you notes..essential stuff! She then had to do her damnedest to get a husband who could afford to make it matter if she knew these things or not!
