There's no such thing as a dumb question! It's a church-sponsored alternative to trick-or-treating, whereby the kids still get to dress up and get their candy, but in a safe environment. The churchgoers bring candy and the kids show up in costume, and go from car to car in the church parking lot, while the grownups pass out candy from their cars. Other activities are usually involved, like costume contests, a Halloween party, a play or skit- whatever. Most churches do ask that the kids wear "positive" costumes- nothing really scary or associated with, say, a slasher movie. It's just kids having a good time, without having to walk the streets and go to strangers' doors.

"Trick or Treating" is an American custom amongst school children. It's 20th Century participation was to knock on a neighbor's door and ask for a "treat" (be it candy, fruit, a dime, a pencil, etc.) If the neighbor did not offer a treat, then the schoolchild would play a harmless "trick" on the person. (Schoolkids once rubbed bar soap on my father's car windows)
The Trick or Treating and Halloween, to my knowledge, have nothing to do with Christianity or the Bible. The Mexican culture on Nov. 1st celebrates "Dia de los muertos" The day of the Dead -- something like our Memorial Day to honor relatives who have died so they will not be forgotten.
Satanic forms of worship do consider Halloween to be a "holy day" and will perform certain rituals of death or evil or fire.
Because of the Satanic connection of evil, people in churches often will object to participating in Halloween festivities. In the place of Halloween some churches celebrate "Harvest Festival" or in the case of the signs you may have seen, "Trunk or Treat", according to the theme of their party. They do this to "fight" the American tradition of celebrating the evil side of the Halloween traditions. Many of these churches are choosing to start an alternative tradition for the churches in their community. And, it really has nothing to do with the Bible.

Trunk or Treating????
II believe Trunk or Treating is where they have car parked in the parking lot trunks open and loaded with Halloween Goodies for the children.
This is Billed as a Safe way to take the Children Trick or Treating as the parent will not have to worry about slime who put harmful items in treats they pass to the children.

Its not a dumb question just a dumb idea. Basically its an alternative to trick or treating. All the families in a church will go to the church with the kids in costumes and candy then the kids go around the parking lot "trunk or treating" for candy.I think it stinks. My daughter will be knocking on doors for candy just like me and her daddy had to.Then when shes asleep we'll raid her candy just like our parents did. Because d**n-it thats the American way!

Maybe its a parody of Trick or Treat. You can probably fill your trunk with food and donate it or give treats for the church to pass out.

Church members gather at the church on Halloween with their vehicle trunks decorated for Halloween and pass out candy. A bunch in my town do so. I'm not into churches at all but it's neat they do this for kids.

I know what it is......church members decorate their trunks to a theme of a Bible story. When the kids come to their trunk, they learn about that specific story and candy is passed out....I think it's a way for kids whose parents don't celebrate the "darker side" of Halloween to enjoy costumes, candy, and fun.

Trick or treating is going from door to door.
Some places have "Trunk or treating"....kids go from car to car in a parking lot at church or school. Participants put candy in the trunks of their car and hand it out to kids. It is a safe alternative to going from door to door.

I know it as going trick or treating at church and people stand in front of their cars with goodies. They give them out to the trick or treaters as they pass by the cars.

Don't know what trunk or treating is, but "trick" or treat means if the house you go to doesn't have candy, they are supposed to do a trick for you. Goes back centuries.
