What are their temperments like? Is it true they are gentle giants? Are they as short lived as Great Danes? Please, no web sites. I don;t want to read about them, I would like personal experiences please.

I have an Irish Wolfhound, a female. She is the sweetest dog I have ever owned. They are extremely gentle and very sensitive of their owners emotions. Even though they are so big they tend to be very calm inside the house. Like big couch potatoes. They think that they are lap dogs, mine loves to sprawl across my lap with her head hanging off the couch. They are at just the right height so they can sit down on a couch like a person and they don't hesitate to do it. Wolfhounds are very loyal to their families and tend to be a little reserved around strangers. They aren't barkers and not aggressive at all. They are short lived, they average about 7-10 years. In France they are referred to as heartbreak hounds, because their life span is so short. I have seen some live a lot longer though. If you get a wolfhound from a reputable breeder you might be able to avoid some problems. Hope this helps!!

Great dogs. Would never have one only due to their short life span and potential health issues.

Recall they ARE sighthounds - while probably the least intense of sighthounds they will chase a squirrel from time to time.
